Bagger the Second.

The jumbled box of bits below is on its way to becoming a model of a Fuchs Bagger.

Why another one? Because the beautiful Busch green one is a model of a DDR version, whereas this was built in the West, and so is probably more appropriate for Schinkendorf.

If I don't get it finished for when it's needed, the green one will be deemed to have been imported from the DDR and used anyway.

I bought this rather nice Kibri kit from Paul B. quite a few years ago, so it's high time I built it. The mouldings, particularly the lattice work boom, are lovely. So far, I've assembled the carriage and wheels as well as a few other bits, as you'd expect from Kibri it's going together very nicely.

    It's a lovely kit, but being HO I decided that it was just too small to look right against 4mm scale stock. I wanted to build a scrapyard scene and I hoped the bagger with its grab would be suitable for loading/unloading 16t minerals pushed around with a kitbuilt 48DS.

      Both it and the RTP Busch bagger I've got would look quite dainty next to 4mm stock, etc. I have lost impetus on the build somewhat, had hoped to get it finished ready for the French Railways Society Summer Rendezvous last Sunday, but ended up taking the Busch model instead. I don't know whether these were imported to the BRD from the DDR, but it looks good!

Schinkendorf is a small German outline H0 scale layout which is currently under construction. The scenic section is approximately 4'10¼" long x 8¼" wide, to this will be added a 2' long "fiddlestick". It depicts a small station on a branch line somewhere in Southern (West) Germany in the late 1980s which has become a terminus due to the line it is on having been closed beyond this point.  Rolling stock is typical of the era, small diesel locomotives with freight and maintenance trains and passenger services provided by the ubiquitous railbus set. There are a couple of sidings, one serves a small factory with a loading platform, while the other is for general goods loading and unloading.  The layout is scheduled to appear at the Wealden Railway Group's Personal Layout Show at Steyning on Sunday 10th March 2024. This is just over 2 weeks away at the time of writing, so I'd better get on with it!

...is the Wealden Railway Group Personal Layout Show at Steyning. This morning, I have a few final bits and pieces to do, then pack the layout and stock etc. Whether it'll ever go to another show is anybody's guess...there's a high likelihood that its next trip out of the house will be in a removal van, and I have no idea how things will pan out once we've moved.  For now....

Rescue.

At the Ally Pally show, I bought this Roco VTG Ferrywagon from Ellis Clark Trains, along with another wagon. I went and got a cuppa and sat down, took it out of the box and found the chassis was severely bowed. Not expecting a positive response, I took it back, but no, the gentleman I bought it from remembered me and when I showed him the problem, refunded my money without quibble. I promptly bought another item with the money, he put the van in the bin, thought for a minute and then said I might as well have it as it would only get chucked away, "see what you can do with it"! Needless to say, I can heartily recommend Ellis Clark Trains! I took the wagon apart after a few days, and found the problem was due to the weight, which is a casting fitted in the centre of the floor, having cracked, swollen and distorted, pulling the chassis put of shape.
